St. Nicholas was born to a rich and noble family in Asia Minor in the third century. His parents died when he was young and he had a lonely life as an orphan. As a young man, he decided to devote his life entirely to the service of God. Obeying the words of Christ, he distributed all his possessions to the poor, the sick, and the suffering.
St. Nicholas is said to have secretly helped poor people by putting fists of money through their windows or chimneys during the night when no one could see him or know who was bringing the gift. One night St. Nicholas threw gold coins in a poor woman's stocking which was hanging by the fire to dry. | |
