Mary's Little Donkey
Joseph bought a little donkey
from the crowded market place,
And though small and gray and ragged,
It had a gentle face.
And the one in charge of selling,
Often unjust and unkind,
Sold the donkey very cheaply,
For he knew that it was blind. But in spite of its infliction,
Mary loved it tenderly,
And she said that very often,
One needs more than eyes to see.
So they started on their journey.
Bound for distant Bethlehem,
On the donkey's back rode Mary,
With Joseph leading him.
But when they reached the city,
Not one room could be found,
So they slept within a stable
On the outskirts of the town,
It was there the little Christ Child,
First saw the light of day,
His mother held him in her arms,
Upon a bed of hay. When the Christ Child saw the donkey,
What cooing little cries
He uttered, as he reached to touch
The sightless donkey's eyes.
And then he gave an answer
To his mother's silent plea,
As the little donkey staggered back,AMAZED that he could see!
